VMware Network Strategy Architect - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Overview

The position of network strategy architect is focused on identifying new innovative use cases and gaps in the VMware portfolio of network solutions for multi-cloud, edge, and cloud native solutions.

The position of network strategy architect provides both depth and breadth on the entire VMware multi-cloud, edge, and cloud native network technology sets. The network strategy architect will act as a technical thought leader in the network space and will interact with global customers to identify new use cases for incorporation to VMware solutions, articulate and evangelize solutions and use cases within the industry, and help establish new solutions across VMware field technical teams. Additionally, the network strategy architect will work with various engineering teams across private and public cloud products, providing feedback on how customer use cases should be accommodated. The candidate will work in the VMware CTO group reporting to the Sr. Director and Chief Technologist of Cloud Application Platforms.

The ideal candidate must have recent exposure to enterprise network, SDN, cloud, and container architectures – both private and public, hyperconverged infrastructure, deep understanding of network designs – including SDN, and exposure to various storage architectures. The network strategy architect must have experience leading use case and service definition workshops, presenting to CTOs, and working with Sr. Account Execs and the Partner channel. The network strategy architect must have at least 15 years of experience in various architecture roles that involved the design and implementation of mission critical systems with stringent SLA of five 9s. The network strategy architect must have experience with articulating the various multi-cloud and multi-regional reliability constructs needed, along with creating designs that improve the full lifecycle of cloud based applications deployed across multiple regions and multiple clouds without impacting business operations. The network strategy architect would ideally have intellectual property in the networking space.

Individual Responsibilities

  • Work with BU leadership to identify and report on strategic gaps, weaknesses, and mitigations in solutions and present innovative ideas for capturing new use cases (improving total addressable market)

  • Work with VPs to serve as the technical leader for network strategy when meeting with most important customers

  • Build and maintain direct relationships with CTOs of most important customers

  • Work with various technical leaders in VMware Office of the CTO, the field, and engineering to establish modern and comprehensive network solutions supporting multi-cloud, edge, and cloud application platforms that meet customer use cases

  • Assist sales teams with building long term technical perspective of strategic accounts

  • Be comfortable in designing complete multi-cloud, edge, and cloud native network architectures, mapping from platform components to the nuts and bolts of operations and infrastructure layers

  • Be a thought leader on VMware SDDC products, help customer base adoptions and influence engineering to improve the product with various practical customer use cases

  • Understand how to position the latest networking capabilities as they relate to multi-cloud, edge, and cloud native trends relevant to VMware

  • Be comfortable with CI/CD, and how to build infrastructure-as-code systems

  • Work with SREs, Cloud Architects, Platform Architects, and customers with various technical titles to influence them on how they can improve their cloud networking architecture designs and integrate those into cloud or container automation & management systems

  • Understand the various cloud architecture standards pertaining to security and data sensitivity

  • Help customers chart data migration as it pertains to cloud architecture transformation

  • Work with a geographically distributed team, 30% travel is expected globally

Education and Experience

  • 15+ year experience with cloud network architectures

  • 5+ experience on application platforms

  • Understand how to build DR, BCDR, and Reliable Cloud systems – exposure to banking systems

  • Exposure to SRE day-to-day activity, comfortable with coding (Python and/or Go)

  • Fluent in virtualization – compute, storage and networking

  • Fluent with VMware SDDC stack, including VVD

  • Knows about current trends in software architecture, e.g. Microservices, container technology, Kubernetes, scalable architectures and backend systems

  • General understanding of distributed systems architectures, challenges and design implications

  • Experience in systems administration and heterogeneous environments, e.g. Linux

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ideal candidate should have bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience, min 15 years experience in IT and product engineering

  • Industry leading technical certifications such as VCDX, CCIE or MCA are highly desirable

  • B.S./B.A./M.S. degree or equivalent technical training

  • Certifications in technologies related to Infrastructure, Development, Desktop and/or Systems Management
