Organization Overview:

Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) has an exciting opportunity for an innovative peptide chemist to join our process development organization. You will be part of a diverse team of, chemical engineers and synthetic and analytical chemists delivering product and process understanding across a broad range of platforms. Top candidates for this position will be able to:

  • Enable the design, development, and implementation of sustainable Innovative processes for the synthesis of complex peptides.

  • Embrace green chemistry and engineering as a means of effecting a paradigm shift to reduce the environmental footprint in peptide science.

  • Show proficiency in multiple modes of peptide synthesis including Solid phase peptide synthesis, liquid phase peptide synthesis, semi-synthesis and enzymatic approaches.

  • Familiarity with chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, and peptide automation.

  • Oversight of development and multi- kg scale-up of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient campaigns at contract manufacturing organizations.

  • Present research findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals.

The ideal candidate will have breadth in multiple peptide synthesis strategies. Must be computer savvy and have strong technical problem-solving ability, and have an internal motivation to work independently and achieve efficient, quality results in a fast-paced environment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Engage with scientists across Eli Lilly’s Development and Manufacturing organizations to develop a deep understanding of new initiatives and improve existing scientific processes.

  • Identify ground-breaking peptide technologies as well as trends in sustainable synthetic peptide chemistry, chemical engineering, and continuous manufacturing.

  • Identify and exploit new scientific concepts, strong problem-solving skills, and be self-motivated to contribute across multiple projects.

  • Strong written and verbal communication to speak to both technical and business-related implications of your work.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Familiarity with small molecules and oligonucleotide synthetic methods.

  • Reversed phase chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, chiral chromatography.

  • Hands-on experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry in the characterization of synthetic peptides and experience with MS data Interpretation.

  • Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge to meet changing project needs.

  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize work to meet interpersonal and scientific goals.

  • Ability to balance multiple activities, prioritize and handle ambiguity.

  • Possible exposure to chemicals, allergens, and loud noises.

  • Occasional travel
