As a Research Design Intern in AI and Future Shells at Facebook Reality Labs Research, you will explore, prototype, and build experiences that define the future of how people interact in AR. You love solving novel problems from first principles and have a vision for an AR world. Join a world-class team experimenting with bold ideas in areas including optics, haptics, tracking, displays, computer vision, user experience, audio, and perceptual psychology. Work alongside expert Interaction Designers, Scientists, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and Software Engineers to create the technology that makes AR pervasive and universal. This position is a Summer 2021 internship and based in Redmond, WA.Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Required Skills:

  1. Take big problems and deliver clear, compelling, and creative proposals for how to solve them at scale

  2. Contribute to high-level strategic decisions with the rest of the product

  3. Focus on impact, identifying and applying constraints that help the team arrive to clear outcomes quickly

  4. Collaborate with other researchers, designers, and engineers to develop, prototype, and test hardware and software solutions.

  5. Produce publishable research that appears in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-cultural collaboration

  2. Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  3. Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in design or related design field

  4. Portfolio featuring examples of design for emerging technologies

  5. Proven experience to contribute to design in a cross-functional environment

  6. Ability to think at a high level about product strategy and vision (not just 'how it should look' but 'what we should build')

  7. Communication skills – you should be able to articulate your design decisions

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op

  2. Experience with Service Design, Design Strategy, or Design Storytelling methods and processes

  3. Experience developing experiences for end users in AR/VR
