What you’ll be doing

The VMware Tanzu Solutions Architect (SA) plays a critical role in building and sustaining customer relationships while driving the adoption of VMware Tanzu solutions. You will be working on the VMware Pivotal Labs Public Sector Platform Services team, helping US Government, State, Local and Education platform teams to architect, build and maintain a platform for modern, mission-critical, cloud-native applications serving a variety of business and user needs. As a “Labs” Solution Architect, you will pair daily with government platform architects and engineers, coaching them as they build, run and manage platforms using agile development methodologies and approaches while helping them to define, validate, communicate, and execute platform vision and strategy. You will work with a team of product managers and engineers to enable your client team to go fast forever.

All of our platform team positions are highly collaborative consulting roles, with 85-90% of time spent in direct, 1:1 pairing or larger team collaboration. During the COVID-19 crisis, this collaboration is all managed remotely, with the expectation that face-to-face engagement in a VMware Pivotal Labs office or customer locations will pick up again once the crisis is resolved.

You will be responsible for

  • Delighting our customers by ensuring successful outcomes to their platform and application journeys

  • Hands-on deployment and optimization of complex architectures, and advancing customer thinking and awareness within the Modern Applications space

  • Being an action-oriented, collaborative, a continuous learner, who has strong customer presence with a desire to contribute to VMware’s intent to capture modern application workloads

  • Teaching infrastructure engineers modern techniques for operating modern platforms

  • Architecting and delivering container platforms to various public and on-prem clouds that meet the client's needs

  • Providing experienced DevSecOps guidance and support for platform accreditation and authorization in order to obtain ATO, STIGs and Information System Controls implementation via contributions to mitigation plans as needed

  • Understanding client goals and formulating that into an actionable backlog that is understood and supported from executives to engineers

  • Practicing and mentoring eXtreme Programming (XP) disciplines. Pairing with client engineers on backlog stories either in person or remotely

  • Designing and implementing "infrastructure as code" and similar cloud architectures

  • Enabling development teams to leverage cloud-native architectures with new and existing applications

  • Be recognized by the client as a subject-matter expert as it relates to Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, containers, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices

  • Delivering mini-workshops to facilitate better understanding of our technologies and practices across teams

  • Communicating progress, roadblocks, and next steps to internal and external client stakeholders.

  • Creating and curating code samples, workshops, and docs, keeping it relevant and up-to-date.

  • Working collaboratively with Product Management, Technical Marketing and Engineering during the development, launch and continued refinement of VMware Tanzu products.

  • Continue learning about VMware Tanzu products through self-study, collaboration with peers, and organizational training.

  • Visiting client offices in various cities traveling on Mondays and Thursdays.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3-5+ years Platform Engineering or similar experience, delivering production platforms to users

  • Experience navigating large organizations and an understanding of complex stakeholder relationships

  • Experience shipping successful products, including defining vision, strategy, outcome-driven product roadmaps and creating and managing backlogs

  • Ability to break down complex problems into actionable steps with measurable outcomes

  • Interest and ability to teach others

  • Experience with several platform and automation technologies, such as Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, OpenShift, Docker, Mesosphere, Rancher, Concourse, Chef, Ansible, BOSH, Puppet, Spinnaker, Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity or related continuous integration, automation and orchestration tools

  • Technical competency in Linux, Windows and other operating systems found in the data center environment

  • Familiarity with infrastructure and platform observability, networking, security, and reliability engineering practices and tools such as Prometheus \ Grafana, Wavefront, Datadog, ingress/egress networking, etc.

  • Functional experience with cloud hyper-scaler technologies such as vSphere, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud. Including components like ESXi, NSX-T, etc.

  • Experience with agile development methodology, ideally Extreme Programming

  • Experience closely collaborating with engineers and designers as part of small co-located teams

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to adapt your communication style for the audience

  • Comfort with ambiguity. We work in an iterative and incremental way, balancing many different inputs and constantly making trade-offs

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate change across Public Sector customers — DOD, IC, Civilian, State, Local, Education — including strategy and adoption of platforms, processes and modernization initiatives

Additional Requirements:

  • Pre-existing Top Secret or TS/SCI Security Clearance or Application for clearance is required for this position

  • This position is a remote (home office + travel) role

  • Approximately 50% travel is expected in this role (post COVID-19 crisis)
