Altra Industrial Motion Application Engineer in Michigan City, Indiana

Job Description

Fully support the Product Manager’s and General Manager’s plans and objectives through the application of fundamental mechanical engineering principles and design standards to best meet customers’ needs. Maintain an awareness of Guardian's business plan and corporate objectives.

  1. Understand all Guardian product specifications for each product line.

  2. Review all inquiries for customer designed and engineered products with the Product Manager to evaluate their desirability from the standpoint of company capabilities, resource allocation and profitability.

  3. Prepare quotations in the prescribed format and in a timely fashion.

  4. Responsible for the interpretation of all specs to Guardian. Advise Product Manager immediately of any special or unusual design, software, or scheduling requirements.

  5. Provide technical support to the Product Manager and Customer Service Representatives to resolve specification questions or problems with the most cost effective approach possible consistent with Guardian's capabilities.

  6. Inform the Product Manager of all significant negotiations, competitive feedback, commercial problems, and sales rep effectiveness. Make recommendations to improve marketing plan and/or sales coverage.

  7. Provide regular feedback to the Product Manager, keeping him/her informed of potential design or manufacturing difficulties in specific applications, progress and performance on specific assigned project orders, and all assigned customer and sales representative activity.

  8. Develop and maintain an understanding of Guardian's manufacturing standards and processes. Apply and present proposed designs consistent with Guardian's manufacturing capabilities and workload.

  9. Assist Product Manager in the development of Guardian product specifications, literature, catalogs and competitive information. Also assist in preparing and presenting technical training for customers.

  10. Coordinate all customer communication and internal communications with engineering, purchasing, and manufacturing for consistent processing of all project orders to which you are assigned in a timely manner. Must be willing to accept specific customer account responsibility and act as primary interface for Guardian Couplings (these would primarily be accounts requiring routine technical sales support).

Job Requirements

EDUCATION: A four-year Mechanical or Industrial Engineering Degree. EXPERIENCE: 1 or more years’ experience with application engineering preferred

A combination of Education and Experience will be considered.


  • Must have practical and technical aptitude.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Computer Assisted Drafting. Experience with Solidworks preferred.

  • Ability to communicate (in both oral and written form) technical and commercial concepts in a well-organized manner. Excellent phone skills required.

  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks to maximize results.

  • Ability and willingness to interface directly with customer purchasing agents, engineers, inspectors and expediters. Strong desire to be directly involved in marketing and sales programs.

  • Professional demeanor, willing to give 100% effort at all times and maintaining a customer focus is a must!

  • Ability and willingness to travel overnight on an infrequent basis to customers.
