The incumbent is responsible for assisting the city's youth and young adult anti-gang and violent crime initiatives, to include street outreach services to gang members, their associates, and families that encourage leadership, goal setting, decision making, training, employment readiness, connect with services in the community and communication skills through a variety of strategies designed to redirect and support positive behavior and prevent gang involvement and other risk behaviors. Community Outreach Workers main function is to raise awareness about programs in the community. Workers in this field need a proactive personality and a commitment to helping others. The ability to brainstorm and problem solve. The necessity of the position to respond to immediate needs. The incumbent must use discretion and independent judgment when representing clients, funding streams and Goodwill. This position reports directly to the Supervisor for Group Violence Intervention, who reviews performance annually.
Essential Job Functions:
Must be able to serve as a role model and helping with participants' needs in other areas.
Provide case management for program participants and document accordingly.
Participate and engage participants in day-to-day and week-to-week activities.
Get to know the highest risk youth and young adult gang participants and the people who know them. Work to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely, including possible retaliation.
Work to gain trust from the community, and the youth and young adult gang participants in ways that can benefit the Group Violence Intervention.
Participate in mediation and work to intervene in circumstances in which physical contact may occur. Call for assistance when needed.
Identify barriers to success and diffuse "hot spots" for shootings, killings, and violence to prevent future occurrences.
Support individuals to enhance their assistance and use of opportunities and programs in the community (job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
Continuously keep Group Violence Supervisor informed of all Community Outreach practices and activities.
Participate in all required agency and Group Violence Intervention trainings.
Perform special assignments and related duties as required.
Associate Degree or equivalent experience preferred in Social Services or related field required. Additional related experience preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to react quickly to situations and provide solid guidance in line with needs of clients, requirements of funding streams, policies of Goodwill and legal requirements.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet stringent deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to motivate others.
Ability to relate to, understand, and be creative in meeting the needs of:
Disabled and disadvantaged clients
College educated clients
Referral agencies in the area
Ability to function under pressure, be self-directed, and be responsible for carrying out job related activities with minimal supervision.
Ability to use discretion and sound judgment when working independent of supervision with clients and funding streams and interpret and implement general placement policies.
Ability to adjust to a flexible schedule based on a 40-hour work week; organize tasks effectively; and prioritize job duties with needs of clients being priority.
Must possess a current driver's license and automobile insurance that provides adequate coverage.
Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach and lift.
Good eyesight and hearing.
