The Senior Category Specialist (SCS) plays an important role in realizing our objective to have a world-class procurement organisation with leading capability in category management that delivers relevant, value-adding category strategies to BP’s Downstream businesses. The SCS provides dedicated specialist category strategy development and implementation of certain subcategories and supports the Category Manager. In this role, while partnering with colleagues in the business interface you will be responsible for engaging business stakeholders to emphasize business priorities and requirements and ensure alignment of category strategies and implementation.

The Maintenance Category is a large category that consists of many subcategories (e.g. Inspection Services, Scaffolding Services, Catalyst Handling, etc.) that support Maintenance, Turnarounds, and Capital Projects.

The SCS has deep knowledge of assigned subcategories and supports the Category Manager to define category strategies by performing analysis and coordinating key inputs (e.g. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking). As a Sr. Category Specialist, you will mentor and support more junior members of the team. The SCS also supports the Category Manager to implement the category strategy at a site / market level by managing the localisation of the category strategy, sourcing activities and contract management to agreed timelines, supplier management activities, while supporting a safe, reliable and compliant operation.

Key accountabilities:

Stakeholder Management Support

  • In support of the Category Manager, manage the interface between category strategy development and implementation by the delivery organisation, working in partnership with Category Excellence, Global Business Services (GBS), Business Interface and Business teams

  • Lead the development of communication content to ensure that category specific messages (such as status, plans, compliance, and market insights) are effectively disseminated across the DP organisation, including the business interface organisation

  • Provide specialist Procurement and category guidance and coaching to more junior members of the DP team

Category Strategy & Implementation Support

  • Lead the development of category strategies for subcategories of work

  • Support CM to ensure a deep expertise within the category area, by accessing MI and external knowledge to ensure the category strategy is informed by an intimate knowledge of the supply market, key dynamics and latest thinking within the field

  • Manage inputs to the development of category and sourcing strategies i.e. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking

  • Working with the global category network, supports the development of new and innovative global sources of supply, and working with the business interface organisation, helps to build understanding and support for new sources of supply in the business

Sourcing and Supplier Management

  • Lead local and regional contract negotiation and execution

  • Lead regional and support local supplier management activities

  • Execute sourcing (high-medium complexity categories) and support business in contract holder roles, gather performance feedback (and variation requests) for input to supplier performance review

Essential Education:

Bachelor's degree in a technical or related equivalent business discipline required.

  • MCIPS/ISM qualification, or at stage of pre-qualification, desirable.

Essential experience and job requirements:

  • At least 7 years relevant experience required

  • Skilled Application in:

  • Category strategy development and execution

  • Sourcing, contracting and contract management

  • Tactical procurement

  • Supplier management

  • Experience in Ariba e-sourcing or other e-procurement tools is desirable.

  • Good working knowledge of P2P processes, and SAP system

  • Demonstrable experience in the relevant maintenance services categories is preferable
